Europe’s biggest bike factory under construction

The construction of what is announced to become Europe’s biggest bike factory started last year in Timisoara, Romania. It will be operated by Decathlon partner, Sport Mechanical Workshop.

According to the latest planning, the bike factory will open this September. After the start-up phase, the new facility of Sport Mechanical Workshop will have an annual output of 1.5 million units, including both regular bicycles and e-bikes. Local media reports that, “Sport Mechanical Workshop already assembles bicycles for French sports retail chain Decathlon in a rented space of 5,000m² in Timisoara. The new production hall which is built near the city, will span over an area of 23,000m².”

 

Production capacity at bike factory

At the start in 2016, Sport Mechanical Workshop assembled 300 bicycles a day, while the average daily output is now 3,500 units. Founded in 2016, the company called Sport Mechanical Workshop is owned by the Italian investors Francesco Russo and Vittorio Olagnero, as well as their Romanian partner Laszlo Nyaradi.

 

Romania is regarded as a good location for e-bike and bicycle production and together with Bulgaria has been named as one of Europe’s ‘Bike Valleys’.
