Long-distance driver Rainer Zietlow and photographer Derek Collins have concluded their record setting cross-country road trip in the Volkswagen ID.4 EV as the duo reached their final stop at Volkswagen Group of America headquarters in Herndon, VA.

Upon their arrival at the last stop of the tour, Guinness World Records announced that the pair are awarded the title for the longest continuous journey by electric vehicle (non-solar) in a single country, bypassing the driven mileage set by the previous record by more than double. “It was great being able to share my experiences with the ID.4 with so many different people, including dealership staff, along the way,” said Zietlow. “Breaking the record is not only a testament to the reliability of the ID.4, but also to the actual readiness of the nation’s charging infrastructure.”

Having stopped at a total of 628 dealers across America and having reached all four corners of the United States, Zietlow and Collins arrived back where they started in Virginia after almost 100 days on the road, beating the 15,840-mile one-country record set in 2019 in Romania using a Renault Zoe.

“Congratulations to Rainer and Derek for setting a new world record,” said Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy, Volkswagen of America. “Their achievement is a significant recognition for the entire Volkswagen EV landscape and this tour provides further proof that the ID.4 is a very realistic and capable alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles as public EV charging stations become increasingly more available.”

The travelers relied heavily on Electrify America’s network of chargers, making 208 stops at Electrify America charging stations by the time the tour ended. Electrify America has the nation’s largest open DC fast-charging network with more than 650 charging stations and more than 2,800 individual DC fast chargers. Electrify America expects to have more than 1,800 total charging stations with over 10,000 chargers in the United States and Canada by the end of 2025.
