BASF has announced plans to construct a cutting-edge Electronic Grade Ammonium Hydroxide (NH₄OH EG) facility in Ludwigshafen, Germany. The new plant will produce ultra-pure chemicals essential for wafer cleaning, etching, and other precision processes in semiconductor manufacturing. This investment will strengthen the European semiconductor supply chain by ensuring a reliable local source of high-purity materials for advanced chip production.

The project underscores BASF’s commitment to enhancing supply chain resilience within Europe’s semiconductor sector — a vital step toward maintaining technological leadership in an increasingly dynamic global market. Operations at the Ludwigshafen plant are scheduled to begin in 2027.

With multiple new semiconductor fabrication plants under construction or expansion across Europe, demand for electronic-grade chemicals such as ammonium hydroxide continues to rise. This surge is being driven in part by one of BASF’s key collaboration partners, which is currently building a new chip manufacturing site in the region. BASF’s investment reflects its strategy of strengthening the semiconductor materials value chain through long-term partnerships and mutual commitments with customers.

The NH₄OH EG produced at the new facility will play a crucial role in next-generation chip technologies, supporting advanced node manufacturing for sectors including automotive, artificial intelligence, and beyond.

As a global leader in high-purity chemicals and specialty formulations for the semiconductor industry, BASF provides an extensive portfolio covering essential production processes such as cleaning, etching, photo, metal deposition, and chemical mechanical planarization.

Driven by a focus on innovation and sustainability, BASF aims for the new plant to not only advance semiconductor manufacturing capabilities but also contribute to the broader European economy.

“We are thankful and proud of our customers’ trust in BASF as a long-term strategic partner supporting their growth ambitions in the region,” said Jens Liebermann, Senior Vice President, Electronic Materials at BASF.

“This new investment further strengthens our technological capabilities and underscores our ongoing commitment to the European semiconductor industry,” added Gops Pillay, President, Global Operating Division, BASF.
