Bosch and CARIAD have joined forces within the Automated Driving Alliance to build a scalable platform for assisted and automated driving up to SAE Level 3. Their shared mission: to deliver advanced, cost-effective driving functions that are accessible to all and suitable for every vehicle segment. This initiative stands as the only European project advancing automated driving on such a large scale.
Joint Development of AI-Powered Automated Driving Functions
Established in 2022, the Automated Driving Alliance is working on Level 2 systems with “hands-free” functionality for city streets, rural roads, and highways, as well as a Level 3 system that can fully take over driving on highways. By merging real-world driving data with an agile, iterative development process, the Alliance is creating a scalable software platform designed to boost safety, comfort, and efficiency for drivers and passengers.
At the core of this collaboration lies a shared development ecosystem. It enables engineers to efficiently test, validate, and roll out software updates, with short planning cycles and continuous feedback ensuring steady, reliable progress in this complex field.
The Alliance’s software stack is already operating in test vehicles and undergoing extensive validation on public roads in Europe, the U.S., and Japan. Through ongoing expansion of testing, the Alliance is improving update cycles and refining data processing workflows to accelerate innovation. In 2025, efforts are centered on large-scale data collection and deeper AI integration, paving the way for more adaptive and intelligent driving functions.
Looking ahead, millions of Volkswagen Group vehicles are expected to feature these jointly developed Level 2 and Level 3 functions. Bosch will also offer this scalable solution to other automakers, driving wider adoption of automated driving across all vehicle categories.
”Data is key when it comes to bringing automated driving systems to the road both reliably and on a large scale. We can only master this challenge together by collaborating on an equal footing and breaking with old ways of thinking. In the Automated Driving Alliance, we are demonstrating with CARIAD how this can be done successfully.”
