
EU new car registrations grew by 1.4% in the first ten months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, marking the fourth month of consecutive growth. However, overall volumes remain well below pre-pandemic levels. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) reached a 16.4% YTD market share, though still short of the pace required for the transition. Hybrid-electric vehicles remain the most popular choice, with plug-in hybrids continuing to expand their share.
New EU car registrations by powertrain
By October 2025, BEVs made up 16.4% of EU registrations, up from 13.2% in the same period of 2024. Hybrid-electric vehicles held 34.6% of the market, maintaining their lead among consumers. The combined share of petrol and diesel vehicles fell sharply to 36.6%, down from 46.3% one year earlier.

Electric vehicles
From January to October 2025, 1,473,447 new BEVs were registered, accounting for 16.4% of the market. The four largest EU markets—representing 62% of BEV registrations—recorded increases: Germany (+39.4%), Belgium (+10.6%), the Netherlands (+6.6%), and France (+5.3%).
Hybrid-electric registrations rose to 3,109,362 units, driven by gains in major markets: Spain (+27.1%), France (+26.3%), Germany (+10.3%), and Italy (+8.9%). Hybrids now represent 34.6% of all EU car registrations.
Plug-in hybrids also grew strongly, reaching 819,201 units. Growth was led by Spain (+109.6%), Italy (+76.5%), and Germany (+63.4%), lifting their market share to 9.1%, up from 7% last year.
Year-on-year, BEV registrations increased by 38.6%, hybrid-electric by 9.4%, and plug-in hybrids by 43.2%.
Petrol and diesel vehicles
Petrol registrations dropped by 18.3% YTD, with all major markets declining. France saw the largest drop (-32.3%), followed by Germany (-22.5%), Italy (-16.9%), and Spain (-13.7%). Petrol’s market share fell to 27.4%, down from 34% a year earlier.
Diesel registrations fell by 24.5%, resulting in a 9.2% market share. Year-on-year figures for October 2025 show a 14.3% decrease for petrol and a 21.9% decline for diesel.
